The Breeder Series - The Ultimate Buzz

As any breeder will tell you – it is damned hard to breed a winner as well as being a long drawn-out process and invariably filled with disappointment and an inordinate amount of time and money.

John Rutter’s first broodmare failed to produce a winner in four attempts and when she began to get a little old he went looking for a replacement.

He chose a winning In The Pocket mare called Scarlett Finn which had managed to have each of her first four foals make the racetrack and included a couple of winners among them.

Scarlett Finn’s first foal for Rutter was a colt by Captaintreacherous and he has hit the jackpot as that colt, racing as Captains Knock has won 13 races and $384,876 in stakes and taken a 1:49.9 in winning the 3yo NSW Breeders Challenge final at Menangle.

Captains Knock also won the 2yo NSW Breeders Challenge final as the now 4yo provided Rutter with not only his first winner but also his first Group One winner.

Scarlett Finn won five races and she is a half-sister to five other winners including Little Sonny Bill which won 22 races and $201,435 in stakes and Essbee Doubleyou with won 13 races and $155,687.

The grand-dam of Captains Knock is a half-sister to the dam of Group Three WA 4yo Championship winner Back On Board while the great-grand-dam Went Overboard is a half-sister to New Zealand 2yo Pacer of the Year Motoring Magic and dual New Zealand Broodmare of the Year Interchange.

Interchange is the dam of seven winners including the dual New Zealand Harness Horse of the Year Elsu p,1:53.6 $2,083,352.
